Susie Heffner is an applied anthropologist with a bachelor’s degree in archaeology and a master’s degree in natural resources and environmental studies. Susie is originally from Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw traditional territory in BC but has called the Yukon home since 2011. Susie started working in CRM in 1997 and co-founded an archaeological consulting company in 2002. Her passion for landscape archaeology fueled a longstanding career in CRM and quickly led to interests in Indigenous knowledge systems and land use. Susie has been fortunate to facilitate and participate in several community-led research projects and for her master’s degree collaborated on an Indigenous knowledge study to investigate the integration of Indigenous resource management systems into biocultural conservation goals. Susie’s research and career interests are rooted in archaeology but focused on social-ecological approaches to conservation, land use planning and the environmental assessment process. At the local level, Susie remains dedicated to capacity building, community engagement and heritage management training. Susie is currently working to develop the Kwanlin Dün First Nation’s heritage unit.
